January 23: Jesus, during his time on earth, really stirred up the religious status quo. He challenged the motivation behind religious practices of the day, among them the giving of donations for the poor, public prayer, and fasting. God's standards are high. He is primarily interested in honesty, and performance of these religious acts not for our own benefit or recognition, but because we love God.
